- Early life and education
He was born in 1925 in Baghdad amid difficult economic circumstances. He studied at the preparatory school and the Institute of Fine Arts, but left the institute in his second year and graduated from preparatory school.
- The beginning of his artistic career
He began drawing cartoons in “Qarandal” magazine in 1947 and published them in several Iraqi newspapers and magazines. He worked as an engineering draftsman in the Ministry of Defense and learned Arabic calligraphy and cartography.
- Artistic school and style
He is considered a pioneer of Iraqi cartoons. He created the character “Ibn al-Balad (Abu Jasim),” which reflects Iraqi folk heritage. He relied on proverbs and folk songs in his drawings, combining satire with reality in a simple and expressive style.
- His Achievements
He published several books, including the first collection of drawings, “Posts and Proverbs in Pictures and Social Paintings,” in 1958. In 1960, he published “The Sayings of Leader Abdul Karim Qasim in Pictures.” In 1961, he published “The Story of the July 14 Revolution in Pictures.” In 1962, he published the second collection, “Posts and Iraqi Songs in Funny Pictures.” In 1985, he published a collection of political drawings about the Iran-Iraq War. He worked in Egypt for the magazine “Modern Iraq” and established a publicity and advertising office. He drew the poster for the Iraqi film “Saeed Effendi,” produced in 1956, and participated in supporting a new generation of artists.
- Influence
Ghazi contributed to placing the art of caricature on the map of Iraqi and Arab art, opening the way for emerging artists to excel in this field. His drawings reflected the lives of Iraqis, their culture, and their social traditions, and addressed political and social issues with a critical and satirical spirit.
- Personal Life and Death
He was a football player and played for the national team. Hunting was one of his hobbies.
He died in 1999, leaving behind a significant artistic legacy.
