Abbas Naaseri / Perhaps it can be said that cartoonists are the little bird of happiness, the bird of peace. And their pen is like the olive branch…
To this day, I have never seen a true cartoonist who is violent, aggressive, or irascible. They calmly pursue their artistic mission, which inherently carries the message of peace and opposition to violence.
But maybe the world isn’t a pretty place for kind people, maybe we should blend in with the world and not be calm.
Cartoonists, despite being on the frontline of opposing violence without any material expectation, have often been subjected to violence and attacks. However, history has shown that cartoonists have won these confrontations.
There are many examples, perhaps the most notable being the most famous cartoonist of the Middle East and the Arab world, Naji al-Ali, who was repeatedly targeted by violence and was eventually shot from behind in 1987 in London while on his way to work.
The most tragic part was that no one was held accountable for his murder, although it was clear to the whole world who wanted to silence him and his character, Handala.
Today, Handala is more enduring than that brutal terrorist, even more eternal than the masters of that terrorist who killed Naji. Handala might even be Naji al-Ali himself who has become timeless.
Ali Ferzat, who was abducted and beaten by a group in 2011, had his fingers broken, but today Ferzat’s broken fingers have also become a symbol of resistance!
Cartoons are the art of peace and tranquility, they have no war with anyone, but the warriors should fear the day when cartoonists reload the cartridges of their pens…
We are born to be cartoonists, to oppose governments that seek anything but peace.
