Abbas Naaseri / He had gone to the boutique, and from him perspective, He had matched his outfit well and rated his choices highly. He thought he had selected the sofa color in the best way to match the home decor, the tie color… all while mismatching things like choosing a tie for sportswear, the magenta color of the sofa for a red-themed home decor, and pairing a formal suit with white sneakers in the boutique.
No matter how terrible these choices may be, they are individual, ultimately they affect only himself, his home’s design, and his appearance.
This is while these choices have not benefited us and do not harm us.
Harm in choices affects us when such individuals, without expertise or knowledge, are going to select our works for festivals based on their illusion of making the right choice.
Today, I’m talking about a dilemma called the “Selection Committee.”
In my opinion, this part of festivals is significantly redundant, or even harmful.
When an artist submits a work to a festival, it is their right for the main jurors of the festival to see their work, even if their piece is at the level of “children’s painting.”
On the other hand, festival secretaries and owners who always strive to select professional jurors for their event sometimes introduce a weaker team as the initial selection committee to win the favor of local artists or those who are not fit for the main jury.
This weak team takes on a very significant responsibility that is truly beyond their capability.
The importance of the initial selection of works is equal to the final selection, maybe it is more important.
Frequently, We often witness that initial selection teams, due to their lack of professional knowledge in similarities, repetitions, techniques, and idea generation, eliminate good works, leaving the final jury with a collection of works that could have been much better selected.
When an artist respects your event and submits a work, it is their right for the final jurors to evaluate it, and when an artist accepts the responsibility of judging at an event, they should dedicate time to see all the submitted works.
Many times, Due to a low standard of the selection committee, we have seen good works from artists eliminated early in the competition, leading to injustice against them.
This happened is not just a phenomenon in new festivals but has even become a part of well-established and significant festivals like Aydin Dogan.
Please respect the participants and allow the main jurors to see and judge all submitted works.
