Weekly Single Page of Cartoonmag / No 63 / I VOTED FOR YOU MANY TIMES, BUT WHAT HAPPENED…?

Abbas Naaseri / In recent years, a big problem has emerged in the world of cartoons, which, because of its repetition and abundance, has turned into a common and ordinary event, and we pay less attention to its disadvantages.

This problem has become a part of cartoons and cannot be changed. Therefore, since we have no choice, we must find solutions to minimize its damage and improve the situation.

Judging in art events is different from judging in sports events. It doesn’t have exact and clear criteria, nor does it have fixed norms, and it cannot be measured. Therefore, we cannot consider the judges’ votes to be certain, correct, and unchangeable.

These days, judging in many festivals is done online, and votes are counted. Generally, each judge rates the works based on their own perspective. The scores are summed up, and the final results are determined. The sum of the numbers equals the result… without any argument or discussion of their opinions, and sometimes without considering similarities and faults.

Basically, the reason for the existence of a jury in festivals is the discussion and exchange of opinions. Otherwise, a judge could give their opinion alone, and the results would be announced.

The most important characteristic of the jury is the discussion and exchange of opinions regarding the votes. Maybe one of the reasons for the similarities in the results is that the opinions and reasons of the jury are not considered. Only the votes and scores are counted, and the jury’s opinions and reasons are not heard.

Sometimes we witness that in in-person judging, it is possible that the votes are counted, but in the end, through consulting and exchanging opinions, the final results may change.

For various reasons, such as economic, social, and political factors, we cannot prevent the organization of online judging in festivals. This has become a common practice, but we need to take measures to minimize its disadvantages.

In the coming weeks, we will try to find suitable solutions and work together until we can achieve better results. There is no way to upgrade the cartoon other than this.
