Weekly Single Page of Cartoonmag / No 46 / FEAR AND HOPE…

Abbas Naaseri / Just like our children — whom we love more than life itself — we are deeply concerned about their future. We worry about their journey through harsh times until maturity. The terrifying games of the modern age, unhealthy media content, news of war, the virtual world…

And just like our children, we love cartoons and are concerned about its future — after countless ups and downs…

Just as science and technology were meant to serve humanity and bring peace, yet at times become light and heavy weapons of war, taking lives — sometimes turning into atomic bombs, striking fear into the hearts of people… and perhaps even creatures on other planets — this same technology has entered the world of cartoons as well. It now enables deception through AI-generated works passed off as handmade art.

If in the not-so-distant past we were merely worried about artistic theft or, more optimistically, unavoidable similarities, today we are facing outright artistic fraud through artificial intelligence. More than ever, we need qualified, expert judges in festivals to distinguish authenticity from deceit.

We must think seriously about saving cartoons so it can safely pass through this critical phase. We must stay alert to AI tricksters and remain faithful to the true essence and noble goals of cartoon art. This art form is a heritage of great cartoonists — a legacy that we must protect.

Many times, I have been attacked for voicing uncomfortable truths in my articles. But what truly matters is that we either find a path toward our goals — or create one ourselves.

Let’s stand together in the Global Village Cartoonists Foundation and, with shared wisdom and cooperation, strive toward these higher ideals. Maybe — we’ll succeed.
