Death Circles Around Cartoonists
WHY NOT LOVE?
Abbas Naaseri / On the morning of April 1st, I was talking to Musa about submitting my works to the Artificial Intelligence Festival in Turkey. The registration page had issues, and Musa kindly told me to send my works to his email instead. But by the evening, in utter disbelief, I saw the news of Musa’s death on the pages of my artist friends in Turkey. I couldn’t believe it. I waited 24 hours, hoping it was just an April Fool’s prank, a cruel joke. But the more time passed, the more I had to accept that Musa was truly gone.
Musa has left us, but his works will live on as long as the world exists. The death of cartoonists is not like any others. Live through their art.
Musa’s work will always remind us of him, his thoughts, and his kind and peaceful heart. Musa will forever remain alive. Life is as simple, cruel, and fragile as this. As Omar Khayyam once said:
“Since the end of this world is nothingness, Live joyfully while you exist, as if you were never here.”
Honestly, I feel like death has been circling around cartoonists lately. Ismail Kera in Cyprus, Roberto Netto in Brazil, Cristian Topan and Gabriel Bratu in Romania, Riber Hansson in Sweden, Ikhsan Dwiyono in Indonesia, Arvin in Iran, Pietro Vanessi in Italy, Ilhan Ozdemir, Nazih Daniel, and now Musa Gumus in Turkey…
In some cultures, when death spreads among people, they believe in making a sacrifice in the presence of God to ward off misfortune.
You must remember that we cartoonists once had the most joyful, warm, and kind-hearted artistic gatherings. But now, we have grown distant, cold, and bitter toward each other.
Maybe now is the time for a sacrifice-not of an animal, but of our pride. Let’s sacrifice our pride, and our condescending looks toward others. Let’s be kinder to each other in the moments we still have. Let’s love-love ourselves, love our friends, love our families, and love our art.
I know that one night, my life will come to an end, The moment of my silence simply will arrive…
So why shouldn’t I be in love?
