IMPOSSIBLE WISH OF EVERY YEAR
HAPPY NEW YEAR???

Abbas Naaseri / The New Year arrives. Every year, regardless of whether it’s the Gregorian calendar, the solar calendar, or the lunar calendar.

On the surface, we wish for a better, more prosperous, and successful year for each other and the world. But deep down, we know it’s nothing more than a Compliment, a fleeting emotion lasting only a few minutes.

Because before we can finish uttering our wish, somewhere in the world, a war, a crime, a wound, bloodshed, or a collapsing roof invalidates it.

As a cartoonist, It is a year, my mind was hurting, I fell into a depression from thinking about war, and revisiting war news, I was sketching tirelessly to create works that might ease the world’s pain. But I inflicted hundreds of wounds on my soul in the process.

So what kind of New Year is this for me, a cartoonist?

Another year like the last, and the years before that—thinking of war, blood, wounds, and displaced persons, sketching with the ink of sorrow.

I as a cartoonist, must quietly whisper a prayer to God, asking Him to keep war, wounds, bloodshed, and displacement away from me.

War never ends because the production of weapons never ends. And when something is produced, it must find its use. For weapons, that use is nothing but war.

Our mission is to express the world’s pain. We remain committed to our mission, just as those in power remain committed to their mission of war.

I wonder, will there come a year when we can live without worrying and protesting against war, violence, and conflict? Without feeling the weight of responsibility on our shoulders?

It’s a unique wish—perhaps a little impossible or out of reach!

But we are cartoonists, and our world is the world of wishes. Whether achievable or not, it doesn’t matter. For our wishes, we will strive for one more year.

I wish we live long enough to witness a year where, at its beginning, instead of wishing for an end to bloodshed, we can sit peacefully with our loved ones, watch them as the year turns, and say to them in that special moment:

“You are the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen in my life!

You are the best and most unique. In hope a year of do and thinking of love.”

HAPPY NEW YEAR.
