Flaming heart, Empty hands
Abbas Naaseri / As I review the current state of the world of cartoons, some issues bother me, and addressing them on my own is beyond my capacity. These are problems that require the collective effort of cartoonists. Although cartoons have indeed strayed far from their heyday for a thousand reasons, it is up to us to come together and rebuild the golden days of cartoons.
I will briefly list the issues that come to mind at the moment. In the coming weeks, I will write extensively and candidly about each one. I ask you to provide me with your thoughts on each point so that I can address them more thoroughly.
If we do not strive to resolve these problems today, cartoon will undoubtedly drift away from their mission and face decline in the coming years...
Just as printing money without backing leads to economic disaster and ruin; festivals, events, and exhibitions must be backed by either financial support, a professional artist leading them, or consultations with experienced cartoonists. Otherwise, the growth of these events will inflict a serious blow to cartoons.
Aside from the judging issues we have witnessed in previous years, where awards were sometimes given to favorites and close associates, today’s choice of individuals who, despite their connections to cartoons, are not cartoonists themselves. On the other hand, some cartoonists have not even reviewed recent cartoons for about twenty years. Even we have not seen just one of their cartoons in recent years. These issues, can be a significant harm to the judging process.
Another alarming issue for the coming years is the lack of emerging young and adolescent artists who are crucial for the future of cartoons and it needs them.
Similarities, copies, lack of proper analysis and critiques, disregard for education, absence of up-to-date and specialized books, government policies regarding cartoons, and more—resolving these issues requires our collective wisdom and effort. None of us can face this alone. Alone, I can only be a spectator of these problems and say: "Flaming heart, Empty hands"
